computer vs security

While you may have heard of both of these programs, it can be confusing to determine the difference between the two, and why you would need both of them to protect your computer.

For enhanced computer security, you’re going to need a firewall and an antivirus downloaded onto your machine; this goes for laptops as well as PCs, across all operating systems.  While you may have heard of both of these programs, it can be confusing to determine the difference between the two, and why you would need both of them to protect your computer.  Both an antivirus and a firewall are vitally important, now that the internet is wrought with such terrible viruses and malware.  Read on to determine the difference.

What is a firewall?

A firewall usually comes pre-downloaded on your computer, because of how essential it is.  Think of it as a sifter; it gathers up all the network information on your computer and runs through it to detect information that seems off.  You won’t notice that this is happening.  A firewall automatically searches through attempted network connections and network traffic, to provide you with safe web material.  It’s pretty aptly named for its function, don’t you think?

What is an antivirus?

An antivirus works on a file-level on your computer.  If you use Google Chrome as a web browser, you may have seen it ask if you want to download a file that isn’t secure.  This is an antivirus at work.  An antivirus kicks in when you’re about to download a file on your computer, and it also searches through existing files to find infected content.  If your computer is having an issue, and you can’t remember when it started, an antivirus will scan your files and show you exactly which one is causing a problem.

Why do I need both?

See, you’re going to download files, especially on a business computer.  Word documents, programs, powerpoints–all of these need to be scanned by an antivirus first, to ensure that no one is trying to send you bad content.  But also, a firewall will protect your connection and web browsing.  It’ll prevent you from exploring content that could harm your computer.  Because even if you don’t download anything, one wrong click to a suspicious website can spell disaster.
