What is the Internet of Things?

Essentially, IoT is describing the wireless connection between “smart” devices, that include more than just your phone or computer.  For instance, we now have home automation security systems that are activated using an app from across town.  The idea is that “things”, every day objects, are being connected by the Internet.

Think back to dial-up.  It was amazing when you could connect to anyone, anywhere in the world, just by using your phone’s connection.  This is the same, but a far more advanced, concept.  The Internet of Things is using wireless capabilities and Wi-Fi to connect objects wirelessly, without a computer.  This could change the way we think about our daily lives; turn on your home lights with the click of a button, or start your coffee maker every day from bed with your app.  However, it’s also incredibly important for businesses and telecommunication.

How can you use it to your advantage?

A report has suggested that the Internet of Things is helping companies in all kinds of ways.  For example, of those who had started implementing it, 63% said they had significant returns.  And saving money is just one reason to engage in this life-changing technology–the same report also says that this is the new way to communicate, and is mainstream in 2016.  46% of companies interviewed reported they would start to implement this technology within the next year.  For businesses, it includes connecting cloud storage, phone systems, security systems and more.  Maybe it’s time your business started looking into it, too!
