One of the most common tech complaints we get is that computers are crashing, oftentimes in a company-wide fashion. There are a lot of reasons why this might be happening, a few of which are harmless, and some which are incredibly dangerous. Don’t scare yourself just yet; solutions to this problem are usually pretty simple and don’t require much effort on your part beyond figuring out the issue. Let’s explore why your computers are crashing so you’ll be prepared to handle it.
Malware
Let’s get the most terrifying option out of the way. Malware can be a nuisance or a serious security issue. It really depends on what your computer ends up catching, and malware can sometimes need to be treated on a case-by-case basis. Occasionally, a quick scan will be sufficient if you have a relatively successful antivirus program. Make sure you run the antivirus when you’re in Safe Mode, which is an option you’ll see upon restart on that classic black screen with white text. If you can’t seem to get rid of it, bring it to a professional. Remember, some nasty malware can end up revealing your personal information.
Overheating
If you don’t know how to properly clean your PC, this can be an easily solvable reason as to why your computer may be crashing. An overheated computer will shut down in order to protect the delicate tech on the inside. Overheating is usually caused by poor maintenance; clean out your tower with a compressed air can and make sure all the dust is away from the fan so it can work properly. If this doesn’t fix the problem, you may have a hardware problem that needs to be fixed.
Fragmented Hard Drive
A lot of downloaded programs and files can end up clogging your hard drive, even if you delete them. They come with a lot of background files that don’t leave your computer when you get rid of the program itself; also, your recycling bin can fill up pretty quickly. It’s also possible you have files you haven’t used in a long time that are taking up precious space. To fix this, you can download a free de-fragging program (do a quick Google search to ensure it’s legitimate) which will compress files you don’t need. More hard drive space means a smoother computer experience.
