With winter storms and icy power lines, power outages are sure to follow.  Unfortunately, when the power goes out, it doesn’t just cause your computer to shut down unexpectedly.  You may find that when you turn it back on, some parts will be missing or damaged.  This can come as a huge shock, and you may be at a loss for what to do.  If this sounds like a familiar situation, read on to discover what you can do when a power outage damages your PC.

First Off: Prevention!

How about we protect your PC before anything dangerous happens in the first place?  A surge protector is a great way to keep your PC safe from power surges, which often occur as the power goes out.  Surges can cause complications with the electronical components of the computer.  To protect your files, back them up on an external hard drive, or to the Cloud.

Won’t Turn On

A PC that doesn’t turn on at all is probably dealing with a power supply issue.  A laptop usually requires a trip to a professional, but for tower computers, it’s relatively easy and inexpensive to simply purchase a new power supply from your local electronics store.  You may even be able to get a more efficient one!  Most of this is easily fixable, though, and doesn’t require a complete replacement.  Your saved files will also likely be untouched.

Turns On, Then Off Again

If your PC turns on, but then immediately shuts off, it’s probably an issue with the motherboard.  This is when the real problems arise.  Motherboards are complicated pieces of machinery that, when damaged, need to be replaced.  Once again, a laptop probably needs professional repairs; however, a tower PC may have an identical power supply that can be found, which can be installed relatively easily.
