How to Protect Your Laptop From Cold Weather

You take steps every morning to protect yourself from winter chills, so why aren’t you taking steps to protect your laptop from cold weather?
You take steps every morning to protect yourself from the cold weather, whether you put on gloves and a hat, defrost your car before you climb in, or brew your coffee extra hot, so why aren’t you taking steps to protect your laptop from cold weather? Here are some easy tips to keep your laptop from freezing and, well, freezing this winter.
Choose the Right Case
Never take your laptop outside without a case or outer protection in any weather, as a simple drop could mean a major cost to repair or replace it. In cold weather, choose a case that offers padding and insulation to your laptop to help prevent the components from getting freezing cold. The other concern with cold weather is moisture damage from the humidity in the air. Make sure that you keep your laptop and case out of damp or humid areas, especially after you come in from the cold.
Be Smart About Where You Set it Down
As often as possible, you should store your laptop inside and in a temperature controlled environment. Even if you think you are just leaving your laptop outside for a few minutes, always take it with you when you enter buildings. If you leave your laptop in your vehicle, it will be exposed to cold temperatures it is not designed to withstand. If you have a liquid crystal display, it could actually freeze due to the low temperatures outside!
Don’t Open It Right Away
If you are taking your laptop inside for the first time in a while, make sure it has a chance to come to room temperature before you crack it open. Warming up your laptop too quickly after it was freezing cold can cause major damage to your hard drive, screen, or other hardware.
