Healthcare Facilities are a Target of Cyber Attacks
PHI, also known as Protected Health Information, is very valuable on the Dark web of the internet. In fact a stolen Medical Record is 10 times more valuable than a stolen credit card number.
Cyber Criminals are increasingly targeting the $3.5 trillion US Healthcare industry with more than 16 million patient records exposed in 2016. Since 2009 there have been over 171 million patient records stolen and sold on the dark web.
Small Healthcare Facilities aren’t a target right?
This is actually incorrect. Even though we hear about large Healthcare providers and insurance companies being breached that does not mean that smaller facilities are immune to these attacks. In fact the decreased level of security and IT infrastructure in these smaller facilities makes them an easier target for hackers. 87% of patient record breaches in 2016 came from Healthcare facilities with less than 50 employees. That is an alarming number if you consider that comprised of nearly 14 million patient records.
What can you do to Protect your Facility?
It is critical to have your IT infrastructure audited and security reviews performed at least once a quarter. HIPAA compliance standards are changing frequently and hackers are increasing their reach at an alarming rate. Consider having a second set of eyes review your IT security policy as well as best practices to ensure that you are fully compliant and protected against external threats.
