3 Myths About Wi-Fi Security You Should Stop Believing

wi-fi security

While wireless networks have come a long way, there are still many myths floating around about Wi-Fi security.

Over time Wi-Fi has evolved to one of the most prevalent technologies that we use every day. While wireless networks have come a long way, there are still many myths floating around about Wi-Fi security. Here are three of the most common Wi-Fi security myths that you should stop believing.

Don’t Broadcast Your SSID

Every Wi-Fi router has a network name that is attached to it as an identification mechanism. This network name is called a Service Set Identifier or SSID. In the default setting, every Wi-Fi router will broadcast the SSID so that everyone within range of it will be able to see it. While this seems like a good security step, computers today will pick up on every network in the area, even ones that are “hidden,” so taking the time to hide your SSID is often time wasted.

Enable MAC Address Filtering

A MAC address is a Media Access Control address. These are used to identify every device that is on or connected to your Wi-FI network. One of the most common Wi-Fi myths is that enabling MAC address filtering will make your network more secure. In reality, the time that you spend setting up MAC address filtering is a total waste of time, as someone who really wants to hack your network will have countless workarounds. Hackers will simply change their MAC address to one that you have designated as safe and then enter your network in a matter of minutes.

Disable Your Wi-Fi Router’s DHCP Server

This Wi-Fi myth uses flawed logic, since securing your network won’t occur after you disable your DHCP server. Again, if a hacker knows how to get into your network, they can add a new address to their device that is designated as safe by your controls.
