How to Maintain Your Outdoor Surveillance Cameras

It’s important for you to take extra care of your outdoor surveillance cameras.  Without doing so, you risk blurry video, compromised evidence, and many other serious security issues.

Installing surveillance cameras, while immeasurably helpful, requires an attention to detail regarding security that you may not otherwise use.  Security is more than just throwing up a few extra eyes and waiting until something goes wrong.  In order to make sure everything goes according to plan, it’s important for you to take extra care of your outdoor surveillance cameras.  Without doing so, you risk blurry video, compromised evidence, and many other serious security issues.  After all, what’s the point of a surveillance camera if it can’t actually survey anything?  Read on to find out how you can care for your cameras throughout the year.

1. Clean the lenses.

This may seem self explanatory, but that means it’s easy to overlook.  Cleaning your camera lenses is a vital part of ensuring your security measures are running smoothly.  A smudge of dirt or a few flecks of dust could end up destroying what could be good evidence.  It is recommended that you clean your camera lenses twice annually, but it’s never a bad thing to go in a little earlier to wipe them down.

2. Ensure all cables are connected.

If you haven’t had security breaches since you’ve installed the cameras, it’s possible you don’t know whether or not all of the cables are connected correctly.  Even one cable that has been knocked out of place or otherwise destroyed could cause the whole system to fail.  Do regular checks to make sure all cables are in place; doing this after a large storm can help to ensure your cameras are not in any areas that are particularly vulnerable to weather interference.

3. Trim the landscaping.

An overgrown bush or branch could obscure the view of the camera, or it could even destroy the camera altogether.  To be safe, regularly trim the landscaping that surrounds the camera to keep it free of any threat.  You may think it’s safer to hide the camera behind foliage, but this is far from the truth.  A camera must be free of debris and interference to work properly.
